Baguio gets P3 M as BP finals champ

Baguio’s sports development programs would flourish more with the P3 million incentive received by the city government after emerging as the overall champion in the recently held Batang Pinoy finals in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

The feat was through the effort of the city’s 15 years old and below athletes, and coaches who championed the weeklong competition earning for the city 61 gold, 45 silver, and 70 bronze medals and defended its overall title.

Cebu City is on second place with 36 gold, 34 silver, and 35 bronze medals, and Davao City settled for third place with 31 gold, 30 silver, and 41 bronze medals.

The City Sports Development Office said the wushu athletes led the charge for Baguio with 14 gold, seven silver, and four bronze medals followed by the judokas with 10 gold, five silver, and six bronze medals and the Muay Thai athletes with 10 gold, four silver, and three bronze medals.

Also contributing to the city’s victory are the archers with eight gold, eight silver, and nine bronze medals; taekwondo team with eight gold, eight silver, and 12 bronze medals; wrestling team with five gold, six silver, and six bronze medals; and the pencak silat team with three gold and three bronze medals.

The arnis team got a total of 15 medals – one gold, five silver, and nine bronze; boxing had six medals – one gold, two silver, and three bronze; athletics bagged three medals – one gold and two silver; weight lifting got three medals – one silver and two bronze; badminton and karatedo had two bronze medals each; while the swimming team and futsal got one bronze medal apiece.

Ifugao meanwhile bagged one gold, one silver, and three bronze medals while Benguet bagged four silver and six bronze medals.

Last year, Baguio topped the Batang Pinoy finals with 83 gold, 81 silver, and 107 bronze medals.
