Young Taekwondo athletes from Baguio amassed 12 gold, six silver and two bronze medals in the 2019 World Taekwondo Club Golden Belt Super League in Hangzhou, China last month.

The athletes from Bravehearts Martial Arts Institute who represented Baguio also clinched eight golden belts in the open poomsae and kyorugi. The golden belt is likened to a mixed martial art belt but a little slimmer for young athletes to carry.

Kaithlyn Carys Ewis Requillo won three gold medals in individual and team poomsae and kyorugi plus a silver in fast kicking while Troy Mencio, Jr. also won three golds in poomsae and kyorugi. Mencio likewise won silver in power punch breaking.

Elcanor D. Mang-usan grabbed two gold medals in poomsae and kyorugi and a silver in fast kicking.

Trisha C. Lobbonan also won gold and silver in poomsae and kyorugi while Danae Ketara Q. Velo snatched two gold medals also in two events.

Jeremy Fagayan, Jr. also brought home two gold medals in two events while Yashneil Angelo Requillo won one gold, one silver and one bronze in three events.

Josh Daniel Tacio also won a gold, a silver and a bronze in three events while Arnel Ambrosio bagged one gold and silver in two events.  Jaime Requillo, Jr. won gold in power punch breaking.

Braveheart coach Danrey Velo said the Baguio delegation is originally composed of 48 members including coaches, and parents from two taekwondo gyms in Baguio, but only 20 were granted visas.

“Despite communication barriers, it has been a fruitful and favorable experience for all of us for we got to know other taekwondo players, coaches and even organizers from other countries and developing friendship amongst them,” Velo said.
