Baguio rules BP finals with 61-48-63 medals

Baguio is set to clinch the overall championship crown in the Batang Pinoy national finals in Puerto Princesa, Palawan with 61 gold, 48 silver and 63 bronze medals as of Aug. 30. The event closed on Aug. 31.

Baguio City Sports Coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales is confident the city athletes will sustain the overall ranking next year.

Leading the medal tally for Baguio is the wushu team with 14 gold, seven silver and four bronze medals. Aleca Breana Dumseng and Andrei Roy Albert, each won three gold medals in their respective events in bare hands, long and short weapons. The wushu team was declared the overall champion in the national finals.

Muay Thai athletes also garnered 10 gold, four silver and three bronze medals while arnis contributed one gold, five silver and nine bronze medals; athletics with one gold, two silvers; badminton with two bronzes; futsal with one bronze; karatedo with two bronzes; pencak silat with three golds and three bronzes; swimming with one bronze; and weightlifting with one silver and two bronze medals.

The other sources of medals for Baguio are not yet available as of press time Friday.

Baguio is being trailed by Davao City in second place with 27-22-29 medals then Quezon City with 22-22-21 medals.

Completing the top five are Cebu City with 21-23-22 and Laguna with 18-19-16 medals.

Laguna topped Baguio in the overall medal during the Batang Pinoy Luzon leg in Isabela earlier.

Baguio is the defending champion for the annual Batang Pinoy national finals with 83 gold, 81 silver and 107 bronze medals in last year’s event, which it hosted together with Benguet.

The Batang Pinoy games features athletes from various local government units who are 15 years old and below. It also serves as a training ground for young athletes for local and international events and eventually becoming national athletes under the Philippine Sports Commission.
