Lakay fighters seek to end 2019 with huge victories

Three Team Lakay fighters led by reigning ONE strawweight world champion Joshua Pacio seek victories when the biggest mixed martial arts promotion in Asia returns to Manila for its ONE: Masters of Fate, Nov. 8.

Pacio, former ONE lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang, and former ONE flyweight world champion Geje Eustaquio, are expected to bring fireworks when they face their respective opponents at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The 23-year-old Pacio will defend his title against Filipino contender Rene Catalan in the main event of the night.

The 40-year-old Catalan, a world wushu champion, has an advantage in terms of experience having fought before international audiences than the younger Pacio.

Catalan, who has six wins and two losses in his professional MMA career, has also one of the longest winning streaks among ONE fighters with six straight wins since 2016.

The younger Pacio, however, has more professional fights than Catalan, having a record of 14 wins and three losses since he turned pro at age 18.

Folayang, on the other hand, wants to end 2019 with a decisive win when he faces Amarsanaa Tsogookhuu of Mongolia in the co-main event of the night.

The 35-year-old Folayang needs to prove he remains a contender in the lightweight division after suffering two losses this year. He suffered a first-round submission via rear-naked choke by former world champion Shinya Aoki before suffering the same defeat in the hands for former world champion Eddie Alvarez.

His 29-year-old Mongolian opponent is a former MGL-1 FC lightweight world champion and Shidokan Karate World Cup winner.

The Ulaanbaatar native owns an impressive 5-1 record, majority of which coming by knockout as he trains at the Shiren Beelii Gym and Mongolian Top Team, the best MMA teams in Mongolia.

The Mongolian fighter has defeated former contender Shannon “One Shin” Wiratchai of Thailand in February.

Meanwhile, former ONE flyweight world champion will face former bantamweight world champion Toni “Dynamite” Tauru of Finland in the flyweight division.

The bout will run it back in a highly-anticipated rematch.

In their first encounter in 2016, Tauru submitted Eustaquio via first round rear-naked choke. Since then, Eustaquio has gone on to capture the flyweight belt twice.
