Baguio fighters win in ONE Warrior 5
by Harley F. Palangchao

Two emerging mixed martial arts fighters from Baguio won their respective fights in the fifth edition of Rich Franklin ONE Warrior Series in Singapore recently.

First to emerge victorious is Ismael Bandiwan of Tribal Submission-Team Torogi who stopped Arif Izzudin via technical knockout in round two of their MMA bout in the strawweight division.

The 23-year-old Bandiwan displayed superior striking techniques that were hardly countered by his foreign opponent.

Bandiwan was also successful in escaping submission attempts from Izzudin.

It was a comeback fight for Bandiwan, who lost to fellow Filipino fighter Mark Cuizon via unanimous decision in July before losing again to Ryuto Sawada of Japan in October, both last year.

Team Lakay’s Jerry Olsim nailed his third win in the series by earning a hard fought unanimous decision victory against Hiroyasu Sakurai of Japan in their MMA featherweight bout.

The 24-year-old Olsim of Bokod, Benguet was too much for Sakurai by controlling the tempo when both fighters are on the ground, but not without much damage on his opponent.

The fifth edition of the event has featured 28 world-class athletes from around the world.

Another Filipino fighter who saw action in the ONE Warrior Series is Team Lakay’s Lito Adiwang, Olsim’s sister Jenelyn, and Michael Fangki of Tribal-Torogi.

The Rich Franklin ONE Warrior Series is a travel series talent search that aims to discover new martial arts talents across Asia, providing promising young athletes with the platform to unleash their martial arts greatness.

The most impressive performers had the potential to get slots to compete in professional bouts such as the ONE Championship and could earn a contract worth $100,000.
