by Ofelia C. Empian

VICTORIOUS -- Muay Thai national gold medalists Islay Erika Bomogao and Jhanlo Mark Sangiao (inset) of Team Lakay Central Gym won their respective fights during the action-packed Kapangan Invasion mixed martial arts event on weekend. The event featured a young crop of MMA athletes from Baguio, Benguet, and other places. -- Ofelia Empian

Young fighters from Team Lakay are riding high in their recent wins in the Team Lakay Championship XVI: Kapangan Invasion IV on April 27.

Jhanlo Mark Sangiao of Lakay Training Center won in his banner fight against Hansel Bilog of Tribal Torogi via rear naked choke at 1:05 minutes of the first round of the event held in Kapangan, Benguet.

Both fighters engaged well in their standup but Sangiao’s grappling skills showed well when the fight went on to the mat.

Bemedalled Muay Thai athlete Islay Erika Bomogao of Lakay Training Center took Christina Tirso of Lakay Training San Fernando by surprise, winning their bout in the first 20 seconds of the first round via ground and pound.

Tirso was quick to inflict kicks on Bomogao at the beginning of their fight but the game quickly changed when the latter got the chance to put Tirso to the ground.

Bomogao quickly pummeled Tirso with her fists causing the referee to stop the fight.

In the subsequent fights, Carlo Bumina-ang took the wind out of visiting foe Arniel Lumayno when he won via knockout in the first round.

Tribal Torogi’s Mhel Clinton Remolar won against Binky Falitnang of Lakay Training Center when the fight was stopped due to the injury incurred by the latter on his knee.

Also successful in his bout was Jefrain Odalio via unanimous decision against Gabriel Andres while Vincent Falli-it toppled Darren Padsingan through referee stoppage due to ground and pound in the second round.

Cedrick Wasit also won with his power fist due to ground and pound in the second round against Mark Jessie Nardo while Aaron Posawen won via referee stoppage due to ground and pound against Ugeanne Ignas.

Jayford Bugnay won via ninja choke against Jersey Pakoy.

Also successful in his bid is Aldrich Toralba winning via ground and pound against Benny Felwa while Christian Manipon won via unanimous decision against Edson Esteban.
