Benguet sports body pushed
by Ofelia C. Empian

A commission that will oversee sports programs and projects for Benguet is being pushed in order to strengthen the grassroots sports program in the province.

Board Member Nestor Fongwan Jr. has proposed the ordinance for the creation of a Benguet Provincial Sports Commission (BPSC) that would help children in the community get into sports.

“Sports development will effectively address the need for a comprehensive grassroots sports program centered on values inherent in practice of sports, thus preventing a child’s chances of becoming juvenile delinquent,” Fongwan said.

He said the sports commission aims to help fight drug addiction, alcoholism, and criminality.

The Benguet Provincial Sports Commission will be composed of provincial administrator as chairperson and representatives from the Department of Education Benguet Division, Benguet State University, Cordillera Career and Development College, King’s College of the Philippines,  and technical schools within Benguet as members.

It shall also be composed of the provincial board committee on youth and sports development and committee on education chair.

An executive director of the BPSC will be tasked to formulate the sports development program, establish plans, and oversee its effective implementation.

The executive director will be designated by the governor to carry out policies, rules, and regulations promulgated by the commission.

The commission will also adopt a synchronized year-round calendar of sports activities and competition sanctioned by the province during the Adivay Festival.

BPSC is also tasked to train athletes to compete and to excel in provincial, regional, and national athletic meets and competitions in a bid to dominate the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association and contribute to the standing of the region in the Palarong Pambansa.

Fongwan said he has met with sports coordinators in various institutions in the province to solicit suggestions for the creation of the commission.

The BPSC is currently being reviewed at the sangguniang panlalawigan.

“We strongly support the creation of Benguet Sports Commission for the best interest of our athletes and the next generations of sports people in our region,” Team Lakay Coach Mark Sangiao said.
