Baguio tennis star trains in Rafa Nadal Academy
by Harley F. Palangchao

BRIGHT FUTURE -- Thirteen-year-old Christian Legacy Academy student Angelyn Trisha Mae T. Atos held a two-week training at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain to further improve her tennis skills with world-class coaches. -- Contributed photo

Baguio’s rising lawn tennis star Angelyn Trisha Mae Toliver Atos is currently in Mallorca, Spain for a two-week training at the Rafa Nadal Academy, which kicked off April 28 to May 12.

Atos, a student of Christian Legacy Academy, is the only female among the seven participants for under 14 years old category, who were chosen nationwide.

The Rafa Nadal Academy coaches selected applicants for the training and schooling program by reviewing the videos sent to them, including the academic performance of the applicants.

The love for tennis runs in the blood of Atos, as her great grandfather, Dr. Gregorio Atos, somewhat propagated the sport in this mountain resort when he founded the Baguio Tennis Club.

Trisha’s grandparents, Allan and Pacita Atos, continued the legacy of their father, as they were also avid supporters of the BTC. Her grandmother was a past president of BTC.

The young tennis player, who has been representing Baguio and the Cordillera in various tournaments, started to play tennis at age seven through the encouragement of her father, Mark Henry, with full support from her mother, Jeannie Lyn.

Under the watchful eyes of her trainers Eduardo Magno, who is based in Pangasinan, and BTC’s Kurt Yacuan and Jun Cortez, Trisha dreams of becoming a professional tennis player and a physician in the future.

To achieve her dreams, Trisha is aiming to follow the humble beginnings of world-renowned tennis champions Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Trisha’s early success in lawn tennis can also be attributed to the support some of individuals.

Her family thanks sponsors Mano Morales, Leah Demyer, Billy Demyer, Rina Caniza, Ana Dela Peña, and anonymous donors for their support.
