The Cordillera “Fearless Highlanders” settled for the 10th place finish with 14 gold, 13 silver, and 24 bronze medals in the Palarong Pambansa 2019 held in Davao City from April 27 to May 4.

Most of the medals were from combative athletes with the taekwondo team contributing nine gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals, while the wrestling team won two gold, two silver, and three bronze medals.

The arnis team pitched in two silver and five bronze medals while the athletics elementary got one gold from shot put courtesy of Denver Tacay Jr. and one silver in the javelin throws from Frederick Ambojnon.

Barrel James Pablo bagged two bronze medals in the gymnastics elementary.

The secondary archery team collected four silver medals courtesy of Charmaine Angela Villamor with two silver medals in the 60-meter and mixed team Olympic round; one silver from Reuben David Supeña in the mixed team Olympic round, and another silver from the combined efforts of Danielle Espiritu, Keturah Gonzales, and Villamor in the team Olympic round.

For the demo sports, the Fearless Highlanders got two gold, two silver, and three bronze medals from Glysm Belteshasar Aliga, who dominated the arnis full contact elementary.

The elementary team composed of Rocaoa Royo, Arianne Poblete, and Princess Sanidad bagged one silver in the aero gymnastics elementary and another bronze medal chipped in by the aero dance secondary team.

The Cordillera celebrated the historic third place win of the futsal girls team made up of the Benguet State University Secondary Laboratory School and Baguio City National High School.

The Fearless Highlanders, who placed fifth in last year’s national event, plans to strengthen the team events, which are usually considered as the waterloo of the highland athletes, through series of trainings.

The National Capital Region topped this year’s Palaro with 86-71-56 medal tally followed by Southern Tagalog region with 66-49-73 medals and West Visayas region with 49-40-58 medals.
