Baguio archers shine in La Union
by Emely L. Caluza

Members of the Baguio City Archery Club braved a rainy competition day and collected five gold, five silvers, and four bronze medals during the 3rd Mayor Francis Archery Cup in Bacnotan, La Union held May 6 to 7.

Archers Sam Cadiente and Cedrick Sabalbro, both first timers, led the charge as they snatched gold and silver in the qualifying and Olympic rounds in the novice elementary recurve boy’s category.

Sabalbro dominated the qualifying round while Cadiente ranked second; however, they exchanged ranks in the Olympic round as Cadiente pocketed the gold and Sabalbro settle for silver.

“I’m a little bit nervous because it’s my first time to join a sports competition, but I enjoyed a lot and I gained new friends,” Sabalbro said.

“You got to fight win or lose, you got to be alright regardless of the scores. You can do anything that you work for. Do it for one another, do it for yourself, and do it for each other. At the end I still enjoyed playing,” Cadiente said, with the group heading back to Baguio City.

The Baguio Archery Club also dominated the field in the bowman recurve girls by winning gold and silver, courtesy of Phoebe Melz Caluza of Dominican-Mirador Elementary School who bagged two gold medals in the qualifying and Olympic rounds, and Heart Claire Modar of Baguio City High School-SPS who also brought home two silver medals.

Gilliane May Modar, also a first timer, took home two bronze medals in the beginner elementary recurve girl’s category.

Cadet archers Cyrus Obenita and Trent Ngay-os snatched two bronze medals in the 60-meter recurve boys. The former won in the qualifying round while the latter made it in the Olympic round.

Despite having only six arrows and a last minute change of arrow rest, archer Renian Keith Nawew bagged a gold medal in the qualifying round and a silver in the Olympic round in 70 meters open recurve boy’s category.

Coach John Hongitan of PhilSpada Archery Club and Baguio City Archery Club also brought the para-archers to perform an exhibition game in preparation for the upcoming Paralympic Games in Benguet this month.
