Close to 200 special athletes join Benguet Para Games ‘19
by Ofelia C. Empian

Close to 200 athletes converged at the Benguet Sports Complex for the 2019 Pilipinas Para Games slated May 9 to 11 in Wangal, La Trinidad, Benguet.

The Philippine Sports Commission in partnership with the province of Benguet organized the event aimed at strengthening the grassroots sports development program for differently-abled athletes.

Para athletes from Tuba, Tublay, Kapangan, Mankayan, La Trinidad, Bokod, as well as Baguio City joined the three-day sports event.

Jan Errol Facundo, PSC researcher under the Office of Commissioner Arnold Agustin, said during the event’s opening that the inaugural para games aimed to reach out to the provinces and to look for athletes that could be honed to join international para games competitions.

“The objective of the event is to discover new breeds of athletes na pwedeng isama sa national pool, kasi basically the Philspada is needing more athletes dahil tumatanda ang mga atleta natin in the past years, and they have to retire in the next years. We also have to focus on empowering the grassroots program of the commission,” Facundo said.

The activity targeted participants nine to 15 years old for midget category and 16 to 21 years old for the junior category.

Facundo said they have pushed through with the program despite the low turnout of athletes, which they originally pegged at 1,500. Four games were played during the event with bocce, chess, athletics, and table tennis.

Wheelchair basketball and archery, which are demo games, were also played between athletes from Baguio and La Trinidad.

Unang coordination meeting pa lang with Benguet, nabanggit na nila na isang malaking pagsubok ang pagbubuklod dito ng mga para athletes, pero itinuloy ito ng PSC dahil alam namin na kapag tumulong kami mas mapapalakas ng province of Benguet ang pag-oorganisa, na kung makita nila kung paano iyong event ng para games baka next year pagbalik namin mas marami ng municipalities ang sumama,” he said.

Facundo said the PSC under Agustin plans to make the para games a regular event for the different provinces.

This is for the PSC to monitor the number of athletes joining the para games and their performances in their respective games.

The PSC also partnered with PhilSpada or the Philippine Sports Association for the Differently-abled and the Philippine Paralympic Committee, which provided the technical directors during sports activity.
