Cordillera lady strikers pen history with Palaro bronze
by Lincoln Dionisio

HISTORY -- The Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association futsal team made history when it defeated defending champion Central Visayas to claim the bronze medal in the tightly contested game in the Palarong Pambansa 2019 in Davao City. This is CARAA’s best finish in the event since it was introduced in Palaro back in 2013. Cordillera’s “Fearless Highlanders” futsal girls delivered a historic finish in this year’s Palarong Pambansa by winning the first bronze for the event in Davao City.

The futsal team scored an upset win when it took down the defending champions in the quarterfinals and survived a tightly contested battle for third place for a team bronze medal.

The Cordillera futsal team drew first blood in the closing minutes of the first half in their third place showdown, only to be erased by an own goal in the dying seconds to end the game tied at one-all.

The gritty squad, however, kept their composure in the penalty shootout to seal the victory, 3-2, for an aggregate of 4-3 and cemented Cordillera’s best finish in the event since it was introduced in Palaro back in 2013.

This was likewise a rare feat in the team sports for the Cordillera, as the regional Department of Education has embarked on a program to improve team sports for young Cordilleran athletes.

The Cordilleran athletes first scored a major upset in the quarterfinals against Central Visayas, last year’s champion and top finisher in group A, via a 4-3 penalty shootout for 6-5 aggregate.

The team yielded to Mimaropa in the semifinals round but not after giving up a good fight, 2-3. Mimaropa eventually won the gold against Western Visayas in the finals.

The Cordillera futsal team was bannered by 10 players of Benguet State University Secondary Laboratory School and two from Baguio City National High School.

The team is composed of Regina Aliping, Lorjane Aludos, Carylle Drea Aquino, Kayla Balacwid, Donna Joy Bulangen, Raven Bungay, Nicole Calsie, Eloisa Collado, Danica Kuengan, Erica Kuengan, Jenny Rose Mendoza and Kyla Claire Politchay.

The team is under the tutelage of coaches Martes Dionisio Jr., Samuel Mendoza Jr., and Rachel Gasigas.

The Fearless Highlanders started their campaign with convincing wins against Bicol Region, 6-3, and Caraga, 7-1, in the elimination rounds. They settled for draw against Zamboanga Peninsula region, 2-2, and Region 1, 3-3, which secured their second place in group D and a slot to the quarterfinals.

Cordillera’s third place feat in futsal is one notch higher than the region’s performance last year.

This year, Cordillera tallied a total of 14-13-24 gold-silver-bronze medals for 10th place in the over-all ranking.
