Baguio archers, swimmers are CARAA’s bemedalled athletes

INDIGENOUS GAME -- Elementary athletes competed in the kadang-kadang event at the opening of the recently held Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association Meet 2019 in Luna, Apayao with Baguio topping the event. -- Ofelia Empian

APAYAO – Archers, swimmers, and arnisadors from Baguio are this year’s bemedalled athletes in the recently held Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association Meet in Luna town, with seven gold medals apiece.

The bemedalled Baguio athletes are Reuben David Supeña, Juleana Megara Conlu, Maenard Rhoman Batnag, and Hanna Jean Walang. 

Archer Supeña ruled the 30-meter, 50-m, 60-m, and 70-m, 1440 round, team match play, and mixed team match play with fellow archer Charmaine Angela Villamor.

Villamor also won five gold medals in the 50-m, 60-m, 1440 round, and individual match play at the close of the annual games held at Eco-Tourism and Sports Center.

Conlu swam her way to championships in the 50-m butterfly and backstroke and 100-m backstroke and butterfly, as part of the group in the 200-m medley relay and 400-m medley relay and the 200-m individual medley of the elementary division.

Batnag also won seven gold medals in swimming. 

Fellow swimmers, Mekonah Hadsan garnered six gold medals as well while Luis Balagtey bagged six medals in the swimming and fellow swimmer Dustin Dame Eslay bagged five gold medals both in the elementary. 

Balagtey championed the 100-m backstroke, 100-m freestyle, 200-m freestyle, and 400-m freestyle while Eslay topped the 50-m freestyle, 100-m butterfly and 200-m individual. Both swimmers won gold as part of the group in the 200-m medley relay and 200-m freestyle relay.

Walang also ruled the arnis elementary division with seven gold medals in the anyo individual single weapon, anyo individual double weapon, team single and double weapon, sword and dagger individual and team and in the mixed double weapon. Justin Apilas of Baguio also won six medals in the arnis elementary.

Apayao Eagles’ Barrel James Pablo gave an outstanding performance in the men’s artistic gymnastics winning five medals in the elementary division.

Special awardees in the sanggul or arm wrestling competition are Ranshep Palawan of Mountain Province for the long arms while the short arms award went to Jhandel Orya of Ifugao then the chubby physique went to Arnel Dalmacio of Ifugao and the muscular physique went to Rames Ceejay of Baguio.

All the top athletes in their respective games will represent the Cordillera in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa set on April 27 to May 4 in Davao City.
