Sports complex upgrade backed
by Ofelia C. Empian

To further boost sports development in the province, governor-elect Melchor Diclas supports the upgrade of the Benguet Sports Complex in Wangal, La Trinidad.

Diclas said he would continue the development of the sports facility particularly the upgrade of the multipurpose gymnasium.

Setting up of basketball court and the completion of the 8,000-seat capacity bleachers are other important project components for the gymnasium.

“We have to make it possible so that we can invite the Philippine Basketball Association or other organizations to play in that gym,” Diclas said.

Diclas is also eyeing the installation of Tartan tracks at the oval as well as putting up of a swimming pool complete with solar panels.

Making the sports complex one-stop shop is advantageous, as all activities and events will be held there assuming the province will host the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association meet.

In the previous Caraa hosting by Benguet, the swimming competitions were held in Baguio City or in school facilities in the city.

Diclas said investing on athletes is likewise important by giving them and their coaches good allowances when participating in the Caraa meet and Palarong Pambansa

To improve grassroots development, the incoming governor also aims to establish different sports facilities in the barangays.

“We need to also to put the gym there and basketball courts para maalagaan natin ang youth natin,” he said.
