Ifugao ‘Wonderboy’ set to clash with Thai boxer
by Ofelia C. Empian

One of the country’s rising young boxers from Ifugao will face a Thai boxer today, June 9, at the TV5 studios in Novaliches, Quezon City.

Undefeated boxer Carl Jammes Martin, 20, is up for another win to add to his impressive record of 12 wins, 11 by way of knockout, and no loss against the 22-year-old Yuthhichai Wannawong of Thailand.

Martin’s current win was last Feb. 16 when he toppled Thai Petchchorhae Kokietgym in the third round of his debut fight in Quezon City.

He had a string of victories last year when he won the World Boxing Organization Oriental Youth bantamweight title against Hashimu Zuberi in Lagawe, Ifugao via technical knockout in April 2018.

He grabbed the vacant World Boxing Association Asia bantamweight title by knocking out opponent Indonesian George Lumoly also in Lagawe.

Nicknamed “Wonderboy,” Martin defended the World Boxing Organization Oriental Youth bantamweight title when he retired China’s Huerban Qiatehe in the second round of their fight on Aug. 28, 2018 in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya.

On Oct. 27, 2018, he retained his WBA Asia bantamweight championship by knocking out Moon Chul Suh of South Korea back in Lagawe.

As for equally young Wannawong, he holds a record of nine wins, seven by way of knockouts, and eight losses and no draw.

Earlier, Martin was scheduled to fight Indian Rakesh Lohchab, who has an impressive record of six wins with no defeats, two coming by way of a knockout, but was replaced by Wannawong.

Meanwhile, another undefeated Igorot fighter KJ Natuplag, who has eight wins, seven by way of knockouts, is set to fight fellow Filipino fighter Reynold Kundimang, who has four wins, one loss, three draws, June 15 at the Enderun Tent in Davao City.
