Ibaloy golfer Wong wins tourney in U.S.

SIMPLY THE BEST -- Cordillera’s best junior golfer Luigi Paolo Wong topped the 19-under of the Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions in Grand Cypress, Orlando, Florida recently. -- Contributed photo

Philippine Junior Golf Team member Paolo Luigi Wong topped the boys under-19 of the Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions in Grand Cypress, Orlando, Florida last week.

The 18-year-old Wong recorded a five-under par at the 72-par fairway in Florida, way much better from first runner-up from Zambia, who had four-over par.

Wong travelled to the United States recently for some minor adjustments in his swing but opted to join one of the prestigious junior golf tournaments and won it.

The La Trinidad, Benguet native scored two-under par 72 on first day then a decent even-par 72 on second day and three-under par 72 on third day to close the three-round tournament with five-under.

Such scoring feat means that the young Ibaloy golfer easily adjusts in different fairways after he started training at the Camp John Hay and the Baguio Country Club fairways several years ago.

Wong, who will be part of the Philippine Junior Golf Team to the World Junior Golf Team Championship in Tokyo, Japan set June 14 to 22, has a busy schedule ahead.

He will be back to the country for the Southeast Asian Games 2019 qualifier at the Luisita Golf in Tarlac early this month before flying to Japan.

After the Japan tournament, he will also compete next month in San Diego, California in the Future of Champions International Tour followed by the IMG Junior World Championship, also in San Diego.
