Eric Kelly out of ONE after series of defeats?
by Harley F. Palangchao

OUT OF ONE? -- Reports have it that former title contender Eric Kelly’s contract with ONE Championship has ended following a series of defeats. Kelly’s camp has yet to confirm the report. -- ONE photo

Former mixed martial arts featherweight title contender Eric Kelly is reportedly out of ONE Championship after a series of defeats in Asia’s biggest media sports promotion.

ONE was reported to have issued a notice of release on June 19 after the Igorot MMA fighter suffered seven consecutive losses from January 2016 to June this year.

Kelly, older brother of Team Lakay fighter Edward Kelly, was once one of the most dominant fighters signed with ONE after winning six fights then a series of victories with the Universal Reality Combat Championship.

Kelly actually faced Team Lakay’s Honorio Banario for the inaugural ONE featherweight world championship belt in 2013 but the latter won the belt after the referee declared a technical knockout due to eye injury.

Kelly cemented himself as one of the formidable fighters in the country, or even in Asia, when he won the ONE Warrior’s bonus of $50,000 after submitting Rob Lisita of Australia in their epic battle via rear-naked choke in 2014.

Since then, Kelly was reported to have encountered personal problems, including finances that contributed to his slide.

Meanwhile, two young Baguio-based MMA fighters could get fight contracts with the Singapore-based ONE Championship.

The 24-year-old upcoming Team Lakay fighter Jerry Olsim and Fight Corps MMA Dave Bangguigui, 23, could be the newest addition to ONE this year.

Bangguigui has improved his professional MMA record to seven wins and one loss following his victory against Susovan Ghosh of India in the Rich Franklin ONE Warrior Series 6 in Singapore last month.

Olsim, on the other hand, remained undefeated with six wins after dominating Myeong Gu Kim for a unanimous decision win in the co-main event of the night of ONE Warrior Series 6.
