Banario, Kelly face acid test in two ONE events
by Harley F. Palangchao

READY FOR BATTLE -- ONE lightweight contender Honorio Banario is set to face Lowen Tynanes in one of the main cards of ONE: Hero’s Ascent at the Mall of Asia Arena on Jan. 25. Tynanes once defeated ONE lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang. -- ONE photo

Former ONE featherweight world champion Honorio Banario and Edward Kelly will also see action in two separate ONE Championship events in Jakarta, Indonesia and Manila this month.

Kelly will again meet Singaporean featherweight sensation Christian Lee in one of the main cards of ONE: Eternal Glory in Jakarta on Jan. 19.

The 34-year-old Kelly and 20-year-old Lee first met in Singapore in the ONE: Beyond the Horizon with the Team Lakay fighter winning the bout via disqualification.

Lee was disqualified for illegal suplex in the very first round of their three five-minute rounds scheduled bout.

Lee, the youngest brother of ONE women’s atomweight world champion Angela Lee, wants to settle the score with Kelly, younger brother of former featherweight title contender Eric Kelly.

“I learned that I should never give my back to him, and that he will come to attack every second,” Kelly said.

“I think this fight could go to the judges if I am unable to catch him with a big shot. I feel he is well prepared for my style. We both do not want to lose to each other.”

Kelly concedes that there is an added pressure to perform as his stable, Team Lakay, is coming off an unprecedented run in 2018.

“There is an added pressure for me to perform and open the year on a high note for Team Lakay. I am the first to fight this 2019, so I am planning to give it my all when I get inside the cage,” he said.

ONE also announced that Banario, who has moved up to the lightweight division, will be in the main card of ONE: Hero’s Ascent at the Mall of Asia Arena on Jan. 25.

The 29-year-old Banario has been included in the ONE lightweight grand prix, a do-or-die battle among top fighters in the division in their quest for a title shot in the future.

Banario will face Lowen Tynanes, who once defeated ONE lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang.

Hailing from Hawaii, Tynanes is an undefeated lightweight competitor who holds a nine-zero  record with four wins by submission and two by knockout.

Using an aggressive striking approach and no-frills wrestling techniques to subdue his opponents inside the cage, Tynanes has defeated some of the biggest names in the Asian mixed martial arts scene.
