Itogon all set to host Pilipinas Akyathlon
by Ofelia C. Empian

It will be an exhilarating run for participants of this year’s Philippine Skyrunning National Championships or the Pilipinas Akyathlon as the dropping temperature would prove as an added challenge when the trailrun commences on Feb. 9 and 10 in Tinongdan, Itogon, Benguet.

The event features five race categories: kiddie akyathlon, vertical kilometer (VK), 10-kilometer trail run, 25K mountain run, and the 49K skymarathon, which will be the national skyrunning championship’s main event.

All categories will start and finish at Binga Gym except for the VK, which sets the finish line at the summit of Mt. Inoman.

The courses feature magnificent views of Binga Lake, rice fields in remote villages, unspoiled pine forests, and  hanging bridges crossing the mighty Agno River.

“Runners must be prepared for steep ascents and descents and various natural challenges presented by the trails,” organizers said.

Pilipinas Akyathlon 2019 is a member of the Asia Trail Master Series. Finishers of the 49K skymarathon category will earn finisher and performance points for the Asia Trail Master Championship, according to the ATM points system.

Last year, the akyathlon saw Elias Tabac and Maria Josephine Liao ruling the 42K race of the mountain trail run.

Tabac, from Davao City, conquered the trail routes finishing off with five hours, 42 minutes, and 30 seconds edging Baguio runner Jeffrey Aligan and Nueva Vizcaya’s top runner Marcelino Sana-oy.

Liao topped the distaff side with a time of 7:37:29 followed by Marjorie Sofla and Marjorie Velo.

Meanwhile, the Cordillera Series Finale 2019 of Team Malaya is set on Feb. 23 and 24 in Benguet.

Four categories will see action in the event. Registration fee for VK is P1,500; P3,500 for the 42K; P2,500 for the 21K; and P1,500 for the 12K.

All categories will have 50 slots only except for the 21K, which will have 100 slots.

Updates about the event will follow. It is the final leg of Team Malaya’s grueling Cordillera Series featuring the magnificent trail running courses in the region.
