Kingad to carry Asian MMA banner vs ex-UFC champion
by Harley F. Palangchao

BAGUIO JIU-JITSU -- ONE flyweight title contender Danny Kingad employed the so-called Baguio jiu-jitsu against world-class grappler and jiu-jitsu blackbelt Reece McLaren in the ONE flyweight world grand prix semi-finals in Manila to reach the finals against former Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight world champion Demetrius Johnson. -- ONE photo

Filipino flyweight star Danny  “The King” Kingad will carry the banner for Asian mixed martial arts when he faces former long-time Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight world champion Demetrius Johnson in Japan in October.

The 24-year-old Kingad and the 32-year-old Johnson entered the ONE flyweight world Grand Prix finals after defeating their respective opponents in ONE: Dawn of Heroes at the Mall of Asia Arena on Aug. 2.

Kingad has secured his spot in the ONE flyweight world Grand Prix finals with a split decision win over Australian-Filipino Reece “Lightning” McLaren.

Kingad survived a number of precarious situations in the first two rounds to rally back in the final round. In the last two minutes of the bout, he dominated a fading McLaren as he was able to land a couple of takedowns and unload some ground-and-pound to swing the decision in his favor.

The American Johnson outlasted Tatsumitsu “The Sweeper” Wada of Japan to take home a three-round unanimous decision.

After a brief exchange on the feet in the first round, Wada took Johnson to the mat and secured his back. Johnson, however, defended very well.

Action continued in the second round with Johnson dominating the grappling exchanges. In the third and final round, Johnson appeared to have Wada figured out and took control of the bout to cruise to a unanimous decision victory.

As the two top flyweight contenders set to clash in October, Asian MMA fans will be rooting for Kingad, who is facing his toughest opponent yet.

Before joining ONE Championship, Johnson is known worldwide for having the most finishes in the UFC flyweight history with seven.

He is also the only fighter on record with over 10 takedowns in three different fights in UFC.

A former freestyle wrestler, Johnson has been called one of the greatest MMA artists in the world and was among the top 10 pound-for-pound MMA fighters worldwide.

Johnson now has 29 wins (two wins in ONE) and three losses with one draw.

Kingad, on the other hand, is excited to show the worldwide audience that Asian MMA fighters have evolved into world-class fighters throughout the decades.

Fellow Team Lakay fighters described Kingad as the future champion and one of the Igorot warriors who could hardly be submitted by bigger and older fighters.

Kingad now has 11 wins and one loss.

His lone defeat was in the hands of reigning ONE flyweight world champion Adriano Moraes.
