Kingad saves night for Pinoy warriors in Japan
by Harley F. Palangchao

TRIUMPHANT -- ONE flyweight contender Danny Kingad was the only Filipino warrior who won his fight in the ONE: A New Era in Tokyo, Japan on weekend. He will face a former world champion in the flyweight world grand prix anytime soon. -- ONE photo

Former ONE flyweight title contender Danny “The King” Kingad saved the night for Filipino warriors when he advanced to the world grand prix semi-finals with a unanimous win against Senzo Ikeda in Tokyo, Japan on March 31.

The 23-year-old Kingad supposedly set the tone for his fellow Team Lakay warriors, but Kevin Belingon and Eduard Folayang relinquished their belts in the main cards of ONE: A New Era.

Against all odds, Kingad battled his Japanese opponent with a series of thudding leg kicks, which the Japanese opponent countered with overhand rights.

Kingad also displayed his improved skills with a successful takedown of Ikeda then went for a body triangle lock before unleashing several punches on the mat.

The Igorot warrior also went for a rear naked choke, which was successfully escaped by Ikeda.

Ikeda, a Pancrase world champion, also went for a rear naked choke with few seconds left in the third and final round but was not successful in sealing a win.

With his win, Kingad improved his record to 12 wins and one loss and he will face former ONE lightweight champion Kairat Akhmetov in the world grand prix semi-finals set this year.

Former ONE bantamweight world champion Belingon relinquished his belt to Bibiano Fernandes of Brazil due to unintentional elbow strikes on the Brazilian challenger.

A rematch will be set between Belingon and the new champion.

Meanwhile, Folayang vowed to come back as a stronger and better fighter following his first round loss due to submission against new lightweight king Shinya Aoki.
