AND NEW CHAMPION -- Joshua Pacio (right) reclaimed the ONE strawweight world belt when he knocked out Yosuke Saruta in round four of their championship match in the co-main event of ONE: Roots of Honor at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on Friday night. -- ONE photo

Team Lakay’s Joshua Pacio knocked out Yosuke Saruta with a knee to the head to reclaim the ONE straw weight world belt in the main event of ONE: Roots of Honor at the jam-packed Mall of Asia Arena on Friday night.

The 23-year-old Pacio became a two-time world champion, a promised he has delivered to his legion of fans after suffering from a controversial split decision loss against Saruta in January this year.

Pacio was the more aggressive fighter since the opening bell by unleashing Team Lakay’s signature world-class wushu strikes but the Japanese fighter managed to land a solid right that dropped the Igorot fighter in the first round.

Pacio was likewise very effective in his defense against takedowns by the Japanese fighter.

The massive KO came later in the fourth round of their five five-minute championship bout when Pacio unleashed a high kick with his right knee solidly landed on the face of Saruta.

Referee Kemp Ching wasted no time in stopping the fight soon as Saruta dropped to the canvass.

Pacio improved his record to 14 wins and three losses while Saruta dropped to 19 wins, nine losses and three draws.

Fellow Team Lakay fighter Edward Kelly bounced back from his January loss when he scored a technical knockout of Sung Jong Lee of South Korea in their featherweight match.

The 35-year-old Kelly was able to escape from several leg lock attempts by the Korean opponents while he scored several blows while attempting to escape from the submission attempts.

Kelly improved his record to 12 wins and six losses while Sung dropped to two wins and five losses.

Kwon Won II of South Korea knocked out former ONE featherweight title contender Eric Kelly at 0.19 seconds in the very first round.

Filipino karatedo champion Ramon Gonzales scored the first victory for the Filipino fighters when he submitted Akihiro Fujisawa via guillotine choke at 1:19 in round one.

Former two-division world champion Martin Nguyen retained the ONE featherweight world belt with a stunning knockout of  Narantungalag Jadambaa in the main event of the night.
