Baguio honors best MMA team in Asia with parade
by Harley F. Palangchao

HONORED -- ONE interim bantamweight world champion Kevin Belingon and other MMA fighters of Team Lakay, Asia’s number one MMA team, were honored with a motorcade during the grand parade of the 109th Charter Day celebrations in Baguio on Sept. 1. -- Ofelia Empian

Fighters from Asia’s best mixed martial arts team were honored with a motorcade during the grand parade of the 109th Charter Day anniversary of Baguio on Sept. 1.

Leading Team Lakay fighters in the motorcade are ONE Championship champions Geje Eustaquio and Kevin Belingon including Brave Combat Federation champion Stephen Loman.

Belingon, who captured the ONE interim bantamweight world championship against two-division titleholder Martin Nguyen last July, was the center of attraction when the crowd cheered and applauded him.

Former ONE lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang, who is considered the poster boy of MMA in the country, is training in the United States in one of the best MMA gyms in the world.

Other Team Lakay fighters who were honored in the parade were former ONE featherweight world champion Honorio Banario, Joshua Pacio, Danny Kingad, Edward Kelly, Gina Iniong, and April Osenio.

The parade featured performers in traditional Igorot attire showcasing the richness of the culture of different ethno-linguistic groups in the Cordillera.

It is the second time that Team Lakay fighters were honored in a grand parade by the city government of Baguio.

In December 2016, Folayang and two-time wushu world sanda champion Divine Wally were honored with a victory parade from Session Road to the City Hall grounds.

Folayang is the first Filipino to win the ONE lightweight world belt after demolishing long-time champion Shinya Aoki in the main event of ONE: Defending Honor in Singapore on Nov. 11.

Wally, an Education student of the University of the Cordilleras, won two gold medals in world wushu combat events in a year from 2015 to 2016. She is the first female member of the Philippine Wushu Team to win in the World Wushu Championship in 2015 and 8th Sanda World Cup in 2016.

Wally also won gold in the 9th Asian Wushu Championship in September 2015.
