Karatedos from the Cordillera carried the Philippine flag with pride and glory by winning seven gold, four silver, and two bronze medals in the Universal Shotokan Karate Union (USKU) International Karate Championships in Western Australia last month.

All eight members from the Philippines who represented three karate gyms in Baguio and Benguet won medals in the event that drew karate practitioners from host country Australia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the Philippines among other nations.

Khurt Jesse Lacsigen of Japan Karate Association-Young Men’s Christian Association under Sensei Edgar Kapawen, Sr. won three gold medals in ippon kumite (basic sparring), jiyu kumite (free sparring), and kata (form) in the 12 to 13 years old.

Playing coach and Buguias, Benguet Mayor Ruben Tinda-an of Shinshin Karate Club won two gold medals in kumite and kata in the 45 years old and above.

Tinda-an’s daughter Kyla Stephanie also won two gold medals in the jiyu ippon kumite (semi-free sparring) and jiyu kumite and settled for bronze in kata in the 14 to 17 years old.

Not to be outdone, three karate players from USKU NIIT under Sensei Joseph Pul-oc also won four silver and one bronze medal.

Arve Phoebe Bay-an won three silver medals in jiyu ippon kumite, jiyukumite, and kata in the 14 to 17 years old while Gary Bay-an won silver in the 45-above kumite.

Alkene Com-ong won bronze in the 21 to 24 years old kumite.

Lawyer Jesse Lacsigen of JKA-YMCA and sensei Pul-oc of USKU NIIT served as tournament judges representing the Philippines.

The Cordilleran team was in Western Australia from Aug. 21 to 26 where they trained and attended a seminar before the tournament proper that drew many of the finest karatedo players in the world.
