YMCA young karatedos shine in 2018 Baguio Day tourney

The Young Men’s Christian Association Baguio City karatedos have amassed four gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals at the close of 2018 Baguio Day Karatedo Invitational Championships.

Gold medalists Jevi Ashcroft Arjant Thadani in the boys kumite (10 to 11 years olds), Ibarro Leo in the intermediate kata (12 to 17 years old), Joshua Lomas-e in the novice kumite (16 to 17), and Lance Awingan in the novice kata (15 to 17).

Thadani also bagged a silver medal in the advance kata while Lomas-e added another silver in the novice kata in the event held on Sept. 22 at the Baguio City High School auditorium.

Adding silver medals for the YMCA were Khurt Lacsigen in the advance kata (12 to 17 years old), Ezekiel Sevidal in the boys’ kumite (10 to 11), and Heilbrun Laking in the intermediate kata (8 to 9) in the boys’ category.

In the distaff side, Angela Querido contributed a silver in the intermediate kata (12 to 17) and Irene Bonuan in the novice kata (12 to 14).

Meanwhile, bronze medalists were Thadani in the intermediate kata, Lacsigen in the kumite, and Ethan Laking in the advance kata (12 to 17) in the boys’ category.

Querido bagged two bronze medals in the advance kata and kumite in the 12 to 13 years old girls category.

The team that trained under sensei Edgar Kapawen Sr. bagged the fourth overall champion from among 14 teams that joined the competition.

The competition was ruled by MKKPI of Taguig City that landed as the overall champion followed by MKKPI, San Jose Nueva Ecija as second overall champion, and PKTS Bulacan Karate Team and PKTS, Vigan, Ilocos Sur sharing the third overall champion spot.

The event was also participated in by teams from AMA College, Baguio City; Arodan, La Union; Baguio Central University; Batangas Karate Team; Japan Karate Association National Institute of information Technology Baguio;  MKKPI San, Jose, Nueva Ecija; PNP Karatedo Team Manila; JKA Tabuk City, Kalinga; Sphinx Black Master, YMCA, Baguio; Team Kabsat Karatedo, Baguio; and USKU NIIT, Baguio.
