Female athletes shine in Martial Arts Festival

Women athletes from Baguio and Benguet proved their mettle during the 5th Women’s Martial Arts Festival from Oct. 23 to 25 at Harrison Plaza, Malate, Manila.

Various local athletes in the Muay thai, judo, pencak silat, and arnis shone during the yearly three-day all women athletes’ event.

Athletes in Muay thai brought home 11 gold, 13 silver, and 13 bronze medals, making the Baguio-Benguet team as the overall champion.

The gold medals are courtesy of Janna Mae Tinay of Sablan, Benguet; Febelyn Diwas of Buguias, Benguet; Ashlene Malecdan, Liane Benito, Jerlyn Kingad, Ruth Santong, Islay Erika Bomogao, Crystal Yvonne Malecdan, Carissa Tarapen and Mariah Trenyce Co of Baguio City; and Zyra Bon-as of Max Fusion. 

Silver medalists are Krisna Malecdan, Cristy Macalling, Rainelle Mabiasan, Cherry Sanchez, Betty Mae Churping, and Victorina Ligab of Baguio City; Jezylene Romero of Sablan; Glydel Balinang of Buguias;  Janica Alawas, Chengay Alce Labfas and Sheila Omalio of Benguet State University; and Honey Lou Roa and Alfaria Charpang of Max Fusion. 

Bronze medalists are Charyza Talabis and Rhea Mae Sacla of Buguias, Benguet; Nicole Dumangsiw, Jarie Safawil,Cristina Lamog and Maria Tinosan of Baguio City; Julina Pasi, Shaira Laruan and Daphy Cantores of Sablan; Hyra Cayambas, Shaira Tolmod and Karn Amado of Benguet State University; and Werona Paderna of Max Fusion. 

In judo, the Baguio women’s team bagged two gold, four silver, and four bronze medals.

The gold medals are courtesy of Helen Aclopen (-52 kilograms, senior division) and Fiona Evonn Merino (63kg, juvenile division).

Also contributing to their medal wins are silver medalists Jazlen Awitan (-52kg, seniors division), Mariah Christine Pauly (-52kg, juvenile division), Roshelle Hoggang (-48kg, senior division), and April Joy Guidangen (-63kg, seniors division).

For their bronze medal win, Kimberly Balageo (-57kg, seniors division), Daphne Pineda (-21kg, kids division), Zoey Itliong (-48kg, juvenile), Anamae Gumastine (+78kg, seniors division) contributed to the team’s win.

Aliyana Mae Lorenzo (-57kg, cadets) and Skyler Martin (-48kg, juvenile) entered the semi-final round but settled for the fourth place. 

The judo team is composed of 12 players and two coaches,  and former national and Southeast Asian Games players Raquel Salinas and Sharon Dino-de Vera.

For the pencak silat, students from Benguet State University were led by gold medalists Vijaya Bibal and Labfas Chengay followed by silver medalist Alexis Abellera and bronze medalist Mylene Lingbanan.

Meanwhile, BSU students Lhorena Rombaoa and Jay Mariel Venture also bagged bronze apiece in the arnis event of the annual women’s games.
