UB, UC take lead in 32nd BBEAL hoops elimination
by Ofelia C. Empian

SOLID DEFENSE -- The University of Baguio Cardinals made sure that their defense is formidable, showed by their strength in toppling the Baguio College of Technology Atoms, 84-67, during their game in their home court. The Cardinals now have 4-0 in their win-loss slate while the Atoms ended with 4-1 in the ongoing 32nd Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League. -- Harley Palangchao

The 32nd season of the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League gets intense as various teams try to outdo each other, with University of Baguio and University of the Cordilleras leading the pack in the basketball men’s game.

On last Monday’s game, Baguio College of Technology Atoms suffered their first loss in the eliminations round against the UB Cardinals ending the high-adrenaline game at 84-67 in the latter’s favor.

“We had a rough start but we were able to get through the second half. We are focusing on our defense always that’s what we always practice,” John Erick Victorio, the Cardinal’s team captain, said.

The loss of Atom Armando Pollante might have affected the BCT Atoms’ performance in the game. The team protested his suspension and eventual dismissal from the league. As a sign of protest, the team put a tape around their arm and jersey.

Pollante twice enrolled a subject he already took and passed some years back only to get the minimum load to be able to play.

But the team found inspiration with Pollante, who attended the game to cheer on his teammates.

Even with this, the Atoms are still on the run for the win, advancing to the next round with a 4-1 slate along with Cordillera Career Development College Admirals with 3-2. UB finished the eliminations at 4-0 win-loss card to top the group B.

University of the Cordilleras, which swept its assignments, is also the top seed in Bracket A.

This season’s host University of the Philippines Baguio, which failed to win at least a ball game with Baguio Central University (1-4), was already booted out of the tight competition.

In the men’s division, UC will go head-to-head against CCDC, followed by UB against SLU and then UC against BCT on the next round robin games on Nov. 11.

The women’s division will see action from UB against PCC while UC will go neck-and-neck against BCT and UB will be against PMA on the same date.
