Ramos family leads local triathlon team in Malaysia

Ibaloy triathlete Jet Ramos together with his wife Lou Ann and son Dash finished strong in their respective categories to lead the Baguio-Benguet team in the 113 Triathlon in Desaru, Southeast Johor, Malaysia on May 5.

The older Ramos topped the overall age group and placed fifth overall in the elite category besting other international athletes in the grueling competition. He finished the two-kilometer swim, 90-km bike and 21-km run in five hours and 56 seconds (05:00.56).

Brian Douglas of South Africa and Simon Boag of U.S.A., who were mere 15 seconds apart, landed second and third place, respectively.

Other Baguio triathletes were Raul Gaerlan who finished 3rd place in the 45 to 54 age group veteran category with a total time of 05:24; Mickey Salada in the 35 to 44 and Stephen Zarate in the 25 to 34 finished, who clocked 05:36 and 06:10, respectively. Both were in the top 10 finishers of their age groups.

Lou Ann Ramos finished third over all among female athletes in the sprint division and second in her age group. The younger Syarifah Yusoff and Flora Teh, both from Malaysia, were first and second with a time of 01:28 one and 01:34, respectively.

Lou Ann completed the course in 01:40 going through the 750 meters swim, 20-km bike, and five-km run of the course.

Meanwhile, 11-year-old Dash Ramos raced hard against bigger 15-year-old boys and took the second over-all finish in the mini sprint division.

Nicolas Groenewegen of Netherlands and Dash slugged it out from swim to bike to run and were separated by a mere 44 seconds gap to the finish line. Both finished the 300 meters swim, 10-km bike, and 2.5-run in 40 minutes.

Joshua Ngu of Malaysia completed the top 3 with a time of 43 minutes.

The older Ramos said his family will prepare for the Philippine National Games in Cebu on May 19 and while his wife will see action in the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco, California this June.
