PHL REPRESENTS -- Seventeen-year-old Ibaloy golfer Luigi Paolo Wong, whose photo was taken during a tournament at the Baguio Country Club, will represent the Philippines to the IMG Academy Junior World Championships in San Diego, California in June. Cordillera’s best junior golfer Luigi Paolo Wong has qualified for the prestigious IMG Academy Junior World Championships, the biggest junior golf competition in the world, set in San Diego, California from July 10 to 13.

This after the 17-year-old Wong, a dyed in the wool Ibaloy, fired an aggregate of 289 points during the four-day 2018 PAL-IMG Junior qualifier at the Pradera Golf and Country Club in Lubao, Pampanga recently.

The four-day competition was the toughest tournament Wong has joined so far, as he was vying for the top spot against his friend, Luis Castro, the top 2 amateur golfer in the country today.

Wong and Castro were both even going to the last hole, a par 5 at 579 yards, when the Ibaloy golfer reached the green after two shots that almost scored for an eagle. He used a five-iron for his second shot while Castro reached the green after three shots and went for a par.

Wong, on the other hand, had an easy birdie to settle the score in a heart-pounding finish. He had 72 on the first day, 70 on the second day, 73 on the third day, and 74 on the last day.

With the win, Wong will represent the Philippines in the tournament where each country is represented by its best junior golfer who won in a rigid qualifying event.

The last time that a Filipino golfer won in the tournament was in 1985 when Carlito Villaroman topped the 15 to 17 years old division, the same event Wong will be playing.

Among the noted golfers who won in the prestigious IMG Academy World Championships are Tiger Woods in 1991 and Jason Day in 2004.

Coincidentally, the annual IMG Academy Junior World Championships is being held annually at the Torrey Pines in San Diego, CA, where Woods won multiple awards as an amateur and professional golfer.

Notably, Wong used a second-hand TM centered spider putter given by a Baguio fellow golfer, which helped him regain his putting confidence.

The Philippine Airlines will shoulder the round-trip plane ticket of Wong from Manila to Los Angeles and vice versa. LA is just a two-hour drive from San Diego.

The last time Wong qualified for the San Diego tournament was when he was 15 years old in 2016, just a few days prior to the Junior World Tour while he was studying in the United States.
