Buyayo defends crown in RTM

Ivan Tayaban Buyayo once again topped the recently staged rice terraces marathon in the scenic municipality of Hungduan, Ifugao on  June 2 and 3.

Ifugao’s very own Buyayo clocked in at six hours, three minutes in the 42-kilometer to lead the rest of the participants who went through the Unesco World Heritage Hapao Rice Terraces,waterfalls, hot spring, cold spring, Spanish trail, and the Panique rice field.

Following Buyayo is Dante Sagayap from Manila with a time of 6:45:55 while German Peter Sieberath trailed behind with a time of 6:59:37 on the fifth staging of the event as part of the Cordillera Mountain Man Series of local running group Team Malaya.

On the female side, Cecilia Kiswa led the 42K with a time of 7:38:35 followed by Ronaly Lanila with 8:14:09 running time while Viel Magna Valdez placed third with a time of 8:12:35.

In the 21K male event, Edward Bermido of Manila ruled the category clocking in at 2:01:38 followed by Hector Dizon with a time of 2:26:45 and Abram Paul Buhol, who clocked in at 2: 28:06.

Felia Piniliw of Ifugao led the female category in the 21K with a time of 2:33:47 followed by Janine Abnasan of Bauko, Mountan Province with 2:38:16 and Italian Cinzia Panero with a time of 2:43:37.

Meanwhile, trail runners will have to look forward for the upcoming Sagada Mountain Marathon set from Aug. 4 to 5 featuring 12K, 21K and 42K.

Hungduan came from the word “hung-du” meaning “to traverse through.

This word means a place where a person traverses on their way to another place, as people in the olden times traverse through Hungduan in going to another municipality or place in nearby Benguet province.
