Magali to defend OPBF Belt vs tough Japanese
by Harley F. Palangchao

TITLE DEFENSE -- Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation super featherweight champion Carlo Magali will defend his belt for the third time against Hionori Mishiro in Tokyo, Japan on June 20. -- Harley Palangchao

Benguet-based Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) super featherweight champion Carlo Magali will defend his belt against an unbeaten Japanese boxer in Tokyo, Japan on June 20.

“Carlo has been training hard and he is determined to bring back home the belt,” said Highland Boxing manager Brico Santig, who has been with Magali in his out-of-country bouts.

It will be a third title defense for the 31-year-old native of Bohol who captured the interim OPBF belt by knocking out Sandeep Balhara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 9 last year. That year, he also won the vacant OPBF silver super featherweight title.

Magali now has 23 wins, nine losses, and three draws.

Santig said Magali will face Hionori Mishiro, a Japanese prospect with five wins with two by way of knockouts.

The 23-year-old Japanese boxer has once defeated Filipino boxer Pablito Canada in his first out-of-country match. His four other fights were all held in his home country.

Before the bout in Japan, Magali’s camp was supposed to push for a bout between the Bohol fighter and World Boxing Council featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt.

But  the Games and Amusement Board declined to grant the request of the Magali camp, saying that the Filipino boxer is not within the allowable rest period.

He will be remembered by Australian boxing fans for capturing the vacant International Boxing Federation Pan Pacific super featherweight title against David Browne Jr. with a stunning knockout victory in September 2015.

Browne later collapsed after suffering a KO loss and died in coma in the hospital.
