MMA warriors dominate 30th Grappler’s Cup season

CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDS -- Dozens of athletes, including mixed martial arts fighters, saw action in the 30th edition of the Team Lakay Grappler’s Cup held at the La Trinidad Municipal Gym on weekend with MMA fighter Danny Kingad (in mount position) winning the absolute division, where champions in various divisions fought for the honor. -- Harley Palangchao

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – ONE flyweight fighter Danny Kingad topped the elite absolute division of the Team Lakay Grappler’s Cup 30 on weekend to lead TL La Trinidad (TLLT) to an overall champion.

TLLT had seven gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals to emerge as the overall champions from six teams that fielded their grapplers in the competition held at the La Trinidad Municipal Gym.

Aside from Kingad, the gold medalists from TLLT were Jhanlo Mark Sangiao in the seniors division 15 years old and above-58 kilograms; Ricky Olivar in the nine years old and below; Aldrich Toralba, 13 to 15 years old; Todwin Minas, 16 to 17 years old; and Gregorio Antonio Abalos III, 16 to 17 years old-58 kgs. and above.

Taro Barrientos led Team Lakay San Fernando to a first runner-up finish with two gold medals.

Barrientos won gold in seniors division 18 years old and above-65 to 75kgs. while teammate Dominick Itable won gold in the seniors division-80 kgs. and above.

Mixed martial arts fighter Dave Banguguigui won gold in the seniors 50 to 60 kgs. and silver in the absolute division to lead Fight Corps MMA to a second runner-up finish.

Team Lakay Central Gym is third runner-up with one silver and five bronze while Kafagway MMA Team has one silver and two bronze medals.

Gridlock Fitness Gym which sent his elite fighters to another tournament in Manila managed to win one bronze medal.

Special awards were also given to Rojon Watawat for the fastest submission via tap out at nine seconds while Todwin Minas took home the best submission award.
