Scrabble players vie for titles
by Ofelia C. Empian

Top scrabble players from Baguio and Benguet will join the National Scrabble Championship set in Baclaran, Manila on July 14 and 15.

The event to be held at the Victory Food Market at Redemptorist Road will be hosted by Baguio’s top scrabble honcho and United Scrabble Association of the Philippines, Inc. (Usapi) president Huub Luyk.

Baguio scrabblers expected to battle it out during the competition are William Caluza, Malou Coronacion, and Usapi secretary Brenda Ambler-Reyes, among others. They will compete against top national players like newly-crowned world seniors champion Odette Rio, a three time national champion, Abdul Suma, and Leonora Labog, among others.

Suma is co-directing the two-day tournament, which was held in Baguio in 2004 and won by Rio.

Luyk, who heads the Baguio Benguet World Builders Club, a civil engineer by profession, said that a total of P62,000 cash prizes will be given to winners in the open and beginners division with the open winner getting the lion’s share of P25,000.

Entry fee is P1,000 in the 16-game king of the hill open division with the second placer getting P10,000, while P6,000; P4,000, and P2,000 will be given to the third to fifth placers.

The Usapi is the sole association to deal with all scrabble clubs, organizations, and other bodies related to scrabble in the Philippines and abroad.

It aims to screen, select, and send players to represent the Philippines in the biennial World Scrabble Championship, the annual World Youth Scrabble Championship, and other tournaments in various countries around the world.
