Hundreds of bikers hit the road in La Trinidad, Benguet during the mountain trail biking fun ride on July 5.

The event, the first of its kind, was organized by the local government unit and the La Trinidad Municipal Police Station in celebration of the Police Community Relations Month of the local police and observance of the car-less Thursday in the municipal hall area.

Bikers group from Baguio and Benguet and neighboring areas such as Team Aray, Buddies, Etag, Climb, Cordillera Mountain Bike Group and Lakay, among others joined the local police in the event.

The 131 bikers started from the town hall at Km. 6 towards the Benguet Capitol then turned left towards the Buyagan-Poblacion Road. They continued on towards Puguis-Pico-Km. 5 (market area) before turning right towards Km. 3 Bell Church.

The participants then made a U-turn heading towards the valley area going to Shilan Police Compac and made it back to the town hall through the main road.

Councilor Guiller Galwan, organizer of the event and a biking enthusiast, said the event is their way of showing the public the importance of road sharing and the fun of using bikes as a mode of transportation.

Galwan, proponent of the measure identifying and designating biking lanes or safe road lane zones in the major thoroughfares of the town, said the measure will enable the designation of courtesy lanes.

“Since our roads are narrow, what we will do is a courtesy lane for motorists, a shared lane. If a biker goes through the bike lane, huwag naman sana nilang sagasaan,” Galwan said.

He said the concept is patterned over the shared-lane marking or sharrows being implemented in the streets of other countries like Australia, Canada, Spain and the U.S.

Cebu City is also  currently reviewing its bicycle lane ordinance.

He said the bicycle lane marking would be one-meter on both sides of identified roads of the town.

Galwan said the La Trinidad Traffic Management Board will be the one to identify the roads to be marked as bike lanes. He said the board will also discuss the designation of blue lanes for persons with disabilities and senior citizens.

“Our advice to our residents is whenever possible, use their bikes for transportation. Kung malapit lang naman, maglakad na or gumamit ng bike,” he said.

LTMPS head C/Insp. Benson Macli-ing said they are also including in their traffic summit the education of motorists regarding the upcoming designation of courtesy lanes.

“We are telling the riding public that there are users of bikes and for them to give these bikers a chance to use the road. This is also for our health and environment,” Macli-ing said.
