Ponteras & Rosia WBA title bout ends in a draw

DRAW -- The 12-round encounter between Ryan Ponteras and Rowell Rosia for the vacant World Boxing Association Asia south flyweight belt settled in a draw in the main event of the Great Fights at the Heights held at the Slaughterhouse Compound gym in Baguio on June 30. -- Charlene Favis

The World Boxing Association Asia south flyweight title will remain vacant as the 12-round bout between former champions Ryan Ponteras and Rowell Rosia ended in a draw during the main event of Great Fights at the Heights in Baguio on weekend.

The three scoring judges saw the fight in favor of both boxers when they scored the championship bout at 112-117, 116-112, and 114-114.

Ponteras of Braveheart Boxing Stable and former Philippine flyweight champion pressured Rosia in the early rounds, to the delight of fans gathered at the Slaughter Compound covered gym.

However, Rosia of Arci Boxing Stable managed to gain points with his effective counter punches, which he executed until the final round to even the scores.

The event promoted by the Raffy Panagan Sports Promotion also featured a thrilling encounter between Jomar Fajardo and former International Boxing Organization world super flyweight champion Edrin Dapudong with Fajardo winning the co-main event via a split draw.

The 26-year old Fajardo of Maasin, Iloilo improved his boxing record to 15 wins, 11 losses, and two draws while the 32-year-old Dapudong of Cotabato dropped to 33 wins, seven losses, and one draw.

In the undercards, Elorde’s Cris Paulino scored a unanimous decision win against Junjie Launza of the Fight Factory Boxing Gym while Jason Buenaobra of the Penalosa Boxing Stable likewise nailed a unanimous victory against Gerry Pabila.

Jayson Vayson of Braveheart rejoiced as he scored a unanimous decision against Jonathan Almacen.

Sportsman and Agriculture Sec. Manny Piñol, together with Games and Amusement Board chairman Kahlil Baham Mitra, and Mayor Mauricio Domogan, graced the event held in coordination with businessman Vic Calderon and supported by Black Mamba, Jomarcann General Construction, and Baguio’ Finest Security Agency.
