UC students lead 6 CAR athletes to Asian Games
by Harley F. Palangchao

University of the Cordilleras students will lead six Cordilleran athletes who will be part of the 335-member Philippine delegation to the 18th Asian Games set from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2 in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia.

As of June 30, two-time world gold medalist Divine Wally, a UC Education student, is on top of the list of the Philippine Wushu Team composed of eight athletes.

Joining Wally in the national wushu team is 2014 Sanda World Cup gold medalist and 2014 Asian Games silver medalist Jean Claude Saclag, also a UC student from Lubuagan, Kalinga.

Also in the roster of wushu team is UC student and 2014 Asian Games and 2013 World Wushu Championship silver medalist Daniel Parantac.

Benguet wushu pride and Southeast Asian silver medalist Thorton Quieney Lou Sayan is the fourth Cordilleran in the wushu national team.

University of Baguio alumnus Jeordan Dominguez is the lone Cordilleran to be picked as a member of the Philippine Taekwondo Team to the Asian Games.

The 25-year-old most valuable player in the men’s freestyle of the 10th World Poomsae Championships in 2016 will compete in the poomsae event.

Dominguez, who traces his roots in Otucan, Bauko, Mountain Province is also the gold medalist in the 4th Asian Taekwondo Poomsae Championship.

The sixth Cordilleran bound for the Asian Games is Benguet golfing pride Paolo Luigi Wong, 17, who will be part of the seven-man Philippine Golf Team.

Wong, the lone Filipino qualifier to the prestigious IMG Academy Junior World Championships, will see action first in San Diego, California from July 10 to 13 before the Asian Games.

Wong was also part of the Philippine team that won bronze in the Southeast Asian Games in Malaysia last year.

The Philippine Sports Commission-Philippine Olympic Committee reported that around 335 athletes, coaches, and officials will banner the country’s flag in the Asian Games.

Expected to boost the team’s campaign are the men’s and women’s dragon boat teams, the women’s softball squad, and the Gilas Pilipinas men’s basketball team.

Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz of weightlifting, jiu-jitsu specialists Meggie Ochoa and Annie Ramirez, judokas Kiyomi Watanabe and Mariya Takahashi, and gymnast Carlos Yulo have been tagged as medal favorites.

BMX rider Daniel Caluag, the lone Filipino gold medalist during the 2014 Games in South Korea, is also ready to defend his title.
