Baguio’s triathlon athlete Lou Ann Hamada-Ramos is the second female Filipino to finish the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon held annually in San Francisco, California.

Ramos finished the race in four hours and 29 seconds placing a decent finish from around 2,000 athletes, including Olympians and world medalists.

Ramos, wife of Ibaloy’s top triathlete Jet and mother of three boys who are also into triathlon, swam for four minutes for the 2.5-kilometer swim then biked the 28-km hilly streets of San Francisco in one hour and 26 minutes before pacing the 13-kilometer road in one hour and 31 minutes towards the finish line.

The 2018 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon featured a jump off the boat swim of 1.5-miles (2.5-km) from the historic Alcatraz Island to the shores of the St. Francis Yacht Club, a grueling 18-mile (28-km) bike ride, and a demanding eight-mile (12-km) run through the trails of the Golden Gate Area.

“I had no choice but to jump off the boat, with the water temperature at 55 degrees. It was too cold that I had to wear a wet suit and booty. The current was so strong and the waves were huge. I was really surprised how I got to the shore. Once done with my swim I was already confident with my bike and run. I already felt like a winner then,” said Ramos, daughter of the late veteran journalist Steve Hamada.

Before flying to San Francisco for the world event, Ramos trained in the 50-meter cold pool of the Baguio Athletic Bowl swimming pool, rode the Ambuklao Road with her bike, and ran up and down Mount Sto. Tomas in preparation for the tournament.

The mystique of Alcatraz Island, home of the once famous prison facility, is part of the attraction that draws more than 2,000 triathletes to San Francisco year after year.

The prison facility was home to more than 1,545 prisoners during its existence as a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963. Famous inmates include Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, Henry Young, and Robert Stroud “Birdman of Alcatraz.”

Perhaps the most famous and real “Escape from Alcatraz” was that of Frank Lee Morris, who was the mastermind of one of the most legendary prison escapes in history. Morris and two others escaped from Alcatraz on June 11, 1962, and were never seen again.
