Lakay founder is second best MMA coach in Asia
by Harley F. Palangchao

The founding chairman of Team Lakay, the most decorated mixed martial arts gym in Southeast Asia, has been ranked number two among top five martial arts coaches in Asia.

ONE Championship, the biggest MMA promotion in Asia, ranked Mark Sangiao just behind Fari Salievski of KMA Champion Martial Arts Liverpool based in Sydney, Australia.

In rating Sangiao, ONE said that Team Lakay has developed MMA world champions like former ONE lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang and former ONE featherweight world champion Honorio Banario.

Of late, Sangiao has been guiding Mark Stephen Loman to become the first Asian bantamweight champion in Brave Combat Federation.

Also in the roster of Team Lakay are several world title contenders such as Kevin Belingon, Geje Eustaquio, Danny Kingad, and Joshua Pacio.

The Kapangan, Benguet native founded Team Lakay in 2003 in Baguio City where he and his prized wards employ a distinct style influenced by the Chinese martial art of wushu.

Sangiao was a former champion in the Universal Reality Combat Championship, the pioneering MMA promotion in Southeast Asia.

Before that, he was a former member of the Philippine Wushu Team where he represented the country in the global stage. He was a wushu gold medalist in the Southeast Asian Games.

“Today, Team Lakay members are well-known for their humility, incredible stamina, and unwavering heart and determination. The distinct skills the team has developed over time are due to Sangiao’s unique training techniques, martial arts philosophy, and the culture of Baguio City itself,” reads the article by ONE.

Another commendable thing about Sangiao is that his wards  look up to him as a father figure.

Like him who finished his college degree, most of the fighters signed with various MMA promotions are either professionals or are about to finish college.
