Eustaquio–Akhmetov 2 for ONE flyweight belt
by Harley F. Palangchao

UP FOR REVENGE -- Team Lakay’s Geje Eustaquio hopes to settle the score with Kairat Akhmetov when they fight for the interim ONE flyweight world championship belt in the main event of ONE: Global Superheroes at the Mall of Asia Arena on Jan. 26. -- ONE photo

This time, they will settle the score.

Team Lakay’s Geje Eustaquio will settle his controversial decision loss to former ONE flyweight world champion Kairat Akhmetov when they fight for the interim world belt of the division in Manila on Jan. 26.

ONE Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Chatri Sityod- tong announced last week that Eustaquio’s credentials being a highly decorated wushu fighter and a former title contender earned him a shot for the world belt for the second time.

Eustaquio and Akhmetov last fought in a title eliminator match in September 2017 in Jakarta, Indonesia where the Igorot fighter suffered defeat, due to a possible lapse on the part Referee Yuji Shimada who called a pause on the fight after Eustaquio looked to have earned a knockout victory against Akhmetov due to series of up-kicks to the face in the first round, which is legal in MMA rules, as the opponent was clearly standing and trying to go for the offensive.

According to some local sports analysts, Eustaquio could have won via technical knockout while another MMA commentator said the Igorot fighter got robbed of victory.

It is the second time too that Eustaquio will fight for a world belt.

The first time he fought for the world belt was in September 2014 against reigning and defending ONE flyweight world champion Adriano Moraes. The Brazilian champion won via guillotine choke submission.

This time, his opponent, Akhmetov, is a veteran martial artist from Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The 30-year-old boasts of a solid 24-1 professional record amassed during a stellar martial arts career, which has seen him dominate his opponents with tenacious wrestling and powerful striking.
