FIGHTING COP -- The second edition of the boxing at the park presented by the Baguio City Police Office with support from the City Government of Baguio was a resounding success with PO3 Eric Dela Cruz (right) winning against Rogelio Cabangunay in the main event. Two former drug offenders also saw action during the tournament. -- Harley Palangchao

Police Officer 3 Eric dela Cruz outboxed Rogelio Cabangunay to win via unanimous decision in the main event of the second edition of the Boxing at the Park at Malcolm Square last week.

Dela Cruz who represented the Baguio City Police Office stable, employed solid defense and managed to throw crisp shots on Cabangunay.

The police officer assigned at BCPO Station 1 was the more relaxed boxer even as his opponent tried to corner him several times all throughout the three rounds.

Dela Cruz, who also trains at Shape-up Boxing Gym, was a bronze medalist in National Open 2005 and a gold medalist in the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League during his college days.

In the two co-main events, Janrey Boy-os, a BCPO boxing scholar, won over Kerubin Sungay, the 21-year-old pride of Mankayan, Benguet while Allen De Pedro, also a BCPO scholar, topped 17-year-old Carol Maguide in the 51-kilogram.

The other victors in the supporting bouts were BCPO scholars and trained by coach Tarjohn Mero were Watkinson Forag, 17; Raymund Marrero, 24, a former drug offender turned boxer; Tyron Gano, 20; Jasper Forag, 17; Eric Finmorog, 19; and Jeremi Navarro, 22, of Muay Boran.

Cazzel Gatinao, 16, a two-time Muay Thai gold medalist topped Dolly Lacsamana, a BCPO scholar in the lone female match while Bonie Angel, 19, of Mabikas Gym won over Renald Polon.

The 51-kg bout between Reanu Batanglawin of Mabikas Gym and Blue-thunder Amdingan of Scorpion Boxing Gym settled for draw.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan, who graced the event together with Panagbenga 2018 chair and Councilor Elmer Datuin, hailed the BCPO leadership under S/Supt. Ramil Saculles for sustaining the event that was widely appreciated by the participants and the public.

Domogan said the boxing at the park, an official event of Panagbenga 2018, will be institutionalized in a bid to scout for the next boxing icon from the north.
