SLU coach eyed in Gilas?
by Harley F. Palangchao

Saint Louis University Navigators coach Raymund Austria might be recommended by the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League to have an exposure program with Gilas Pilipinas.

Veteran sports journalist Joaquin Henson, who was in Baguio for a lecture on sports journalism, said that BBEAL Commissioner Djalma Arnedo informed him he would recommend Austria for apprenticeship with Gilas through Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Exec. Dir. Sonny Barrios.

Arnedo said he was impressed by Austria for building a strong team from players who were selected from intramurals and walk-ons.

The current batch of SLU Navigators has no player recruited from outside campus yet Arnedo was able to establish a competitive lineup that exceeded the expectations of the BBEAL community.

SLU Navigators have eliminated the second-seed Baguio College of Technology Atoms, who earlier had twice-to-win advantage leading to the semifinals of the “final four” recently.

Third ranked SLU has leaned on Joseph Ong, Jed Barrientos and Shawn Aquisay to hack out the win over the second ranked BCT whom they beat in the eliminations by six points.

Ong had 17, Barrientos made 15, while Aquisay had 13 in SLU’s effort that may net them a return to the finals, a zone they never entered since the 2008 season where they lost to Cordillera Career and Development College.

SLU ended the season as first runner-up in the men’s division.
