69TH FIL-AM GOLF -- The 69th Fil-Am Invitational Golf Tournament kicked off Friday with ceremonial tees off at Camp John Hay and Baguio Country Club. Opening the biggest and longest amateur golf tourney in the Asia Pacific rim are BCC GM and Fil-Am co-chair Anthony de Leon, BCC senior’s champ Mar Bustos,  San Miguel Corp. Tollways Operations President and CEO Manny Bonoan, Mayor Morris Domogan, Rep. Mark Go, Fil-Am trustee Shean Bedi, and CJH Club Manager and Fil-Am co-chair Tim Allen. -- Harley Palangchao

The battle for golf supremacy kicked off on weekend with 91 seniors’ teams and dozens of teams for regular flights F and G ushering in the 69th edition of the Fil-Am Invitational Golf Tournament at the Baguio Country Club and Camp John Hay fairways.

Organizers of the biggest and longest amateur world tournament in the Asia Pacific rim said there was an increase of over 20 teams in the seniors compared to last year.

Organizers likewise confirmed the creation for the first time of super seniors division for players who are 70 years old and above with co-host Camp John Hay fielding a team.

This year’s tournament will be more exciting as four brand new Toyota cars will be up for grabs.

Two Toyota Rush subcompact SUVs will be given to any player who will make a hole-in-one either on BCC’s hole 10 or CJH’s hole 18. Both holes are par-three.

Two other Toyota Wigos, meanwhile, will be raffled off during the seniors’ division awards night set on Dec. 6 and the regular division on Dec. 15.

Last year, a retired police general brought home a brand new Toyota for making a hole-in-one at BCC.

Former pro golfer Eddie Bagtas is also reported to banner Team Luisita, which will defend its title in the senior’s premier Fil-Championship flight.

Manila Southwoods’ senior team will be bannered by Tommy Manotoc, who remains a formidable player in the event backed by San Miguel.

Reports stated that Benguet’s most prolific young golfer Luigi Paolo Wong, 18, will be suiting up for the Royal Northwoods this year after his championship stint with Manila Southwoods in the regular’s premier flight last year.

Aside from the Fil and Am championship flights, the regular division will also present flights A, B, C, D, and E.

Baguio Mayor Mauricio Domogan has issued Administrative Order 195 suspending the implementation of the Number Coding Scheme for participants of the two-week tournament.

“We need to suspend the implementation of the number coding scheme for all private vehicles only in the city on the aforesaid dates to provide our golfers, visitors and their families convenient and stress-free journey around the city and to help boost the city’s identity as a prime tourist destination,” Domogan said.
