BBEAL HOOPS CHAMPS -- For the nth time, the University of Baguio Cardinals clinched the basketball championship of the 32nd season of the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League by edging Saint Louis University Navigators in game two of the best of three finals, 84-78, at the SLU gymnasium on Friday night. -- Ofelia Empian

For the 25th time in the history of the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League, the University of Baguio men’s Cardinals captured the championship trophy in the highly contested basketball game by dominating Saint Louis University Navigators in game 2 of the best of three finals, 84-78, on Nov. 30.

The Cardinals outclassed the Navigators in an action-packed game two at latter’s homecourt.

The first and second quarter was a bit tight for the Navigators as the Cardinals played the upper hand with the first quarter ending in 29-20 while the next canto saw a mere three-point advantage on the champ’s part, 44-41.

Not letting up, the Navigators’ top scorer Shawn Aquisay helped close the gap with his 27 points along with Jed Barrientos’ 13 points ending the quarter with a bang at 57-66 that fazed the Cardinals.

It was then a battle for each team’s pride as the players upped their games, with Cardinals pummeled points after points courtesy of John Erick Victorio’s 16 points, Libert Beejay Caccam’s 14 and Vince Ahron Sibbaluca’s 11 points.

The Cardinals proved to be too much for the Navigators, who tried their best to close the furthering gap at two-minutes left in the game but failed to extend the finals to game three.

It was still a fight to the finish for the Navigators who went through the needle to get to the finals after nine years.

Cardinals coach Joel Flores has acknowledged that his team was surprised with the great performance of SLU.

Grabe ang step up ng game ng SLU especially with their defense. Ngayon lang sila naglaro ng pisikal. Our athletes all stepped up in the finals at sulit ang last playing year ni John Erick Victorio. Hopefully intact pa rin ang aming players next year,” Flores said.

Meanwhile, the Baguio College of Technology Atoms survived the gritty Cordillera Career Development College Admirals, 84-80, to rank third.

In the distaff side, the Lady Cardinals also revved up their game winning over the University of the Cordilleras Lady Jaguars with game one ending in 83-80.

Game 2 for women is scheduled on Dec. 8 at the UB gym while game 3 will be on Dec. 9 at the UC gym.

The battle for third in the women’s side between the Philippine Military Academy and SLU is set today, Dec. 2, at the SLU gym.
