JKA–YMCA rules karate tournament in Buguias

OVERALL CHAMPIONS -- Young karatedo practitioners from JKA-YMCA Baguio chapter under 5th dan blackbelt Edgar Kapawen Sr. have amassed nine gold, two silver and four bronze medals to become overall champions in the 1st Mayor’s Cup Regional Karate Championship 2018 in Buguias, Benguet recently. -- Contributed photo

Karatedo practitioners from Japan Karate Association-Young Mens Christian Association Baguio Chapter emerged the overall champion in the recent 1st Mayor’s Cup Regional Karate Championship 2018 in Loo, Buguias, Benguet.

With nine gold, two silver and four bronze medals, JKA-YMCA under 5th dan blackbelt Edgar Kapawen Sr. ruled the tournament that was part of the celebration of the Buguias Albubo Festival that drew countless participants from various karate clubs in the localities.

Gold medalists in the kata (form) division were Cedric Vaughn Malia, Azriel Job Angayon, Ezekiel Alexander Sevidal, Redo Pinkihan, and Jann Russel Angway.

Angelo Querido and Khyzer Hans Kapawen were also gold medalists in the advance/open kata division.

The other medalists in kata were Ithuriel John Sevidal for silver, Khurt Jessie Lacsigen, also silver for advance, and Arjant Jevi Aschcroft for bronze.

The gold medalists in the kumite (sparring) division were I.T. Sevidal, Angelo Querido, K.H. Kapawen, and AJ Thadani.

The silver medalist in kumite was Ibaro Leo while the bronze medalists were C.Y. Malia, E.A. Sevidal, Xian Bengwayan, K.J. Lacsigen, and London Alexander Sevidal.

Buguias, mostly under SSKI, was the first runner-up while Mountain Province completed the top three overall finishers.

Last month, JKA-YMCA Baguio placed second overall in the 3rd Panagbenga Karatedo National Invitational Championship in Baguio.

JKA-YMCA Baguio amassed eight gold, six silver and four bronze medals in the kata and kumite events of the tournament held at the Baguio City High School auditorium.
