Cordillera deploys 500 strong athletes to Palarong Pambansa
by Ofelia C. Empian

Around 500 athletes from the Cordillera will be sent to the Palarong Pambansa set from April 16 to 20 in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

With the moniker, “Fearless highlanders,” Department of Education-Cordillera Information Officer and Deputy Regional Sports Coordinator Georaloy Palao-ay said the region’s athletes are prepared to compete with the best young athletes from other regions.

“We hope to reach the top three this year,” Palao-ay said. The region ranked fourth place in 2015.

He said while the region is banking on the individual events such as arnis, taekwondo, wushu, archery, and chess, team events undeniably also shone in last year’s Palaro with football, futsal, basketball and batted balls athletes improving their performances.

He also lauded female athletes in the various fields for contributing much in the sixth place overall standing of the region with 26 gold, 21 silver, and 21 bronze medals last year.

The region is set to send 489 athletes for the regular and demo sports and 137 coaches and officials.

Majority of the athletes will be coming from Baguio City after lording over the 2018 Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association meet  in Abra with 211 delegates, Benguet has 86 while Abra and Ifugao have 54 and 36, respectively.

Tabuk City and Kalinga will send 49 delegates while Apayao and Mountain Province have 32 and 21 delegates in that order.

To inspire the athletes, Palao-ay said the incentives will be increased wherein individual gold medalists will receive P5,000 each while the silver and bronze medalists will get P3,000 and P2,000, respectively.

Last year, the cash incentives for athletes were at P3,000, P2,000, and P1,000 for gold, silver and bronze medalists. He said incentives for team events will be different while coaches and trainers will also receive separate cash incentives.

The Palarong Pambansa 2018 host province is expected to give student-athletes a unique experience during the games, which coincides with the province’s 200th founding anniversary.
