University of Baguio’s Jomar Balangui seized a silver medal becoming the third Filipino athlete to win a medal in the 58-year-old Summer Universiade tournament held in Taiwan in August.

The 19-year-old Balangui battled it out against Yuan Peng of China in the gold medal round where the Chinese wushu sanda fighter prevailed over the much smaller and younger Baguio fighter.

Before the championship round, Balangui and Peng, given their credentials, were on bye during the quarterfinals. Both qualified to have their first fight in the semifinals.

Balangui defeated 18-year-old Isiah Ray Enriquez of America in the semifinals before the cheering crowd gathered to watch the event held at the Hsinchu County Gymnasium in Zhubei, Hsinchu County, Taiwan.

It was a first international medal for Balangui who has won in previous regional and national wushu sanda competitions.

“I feel blessed for all my efforts and hard work. The time I spent training did not go to waste. Having this kind of exposure gives me more confidence for my next fights in the future. I felt great representing the country, too. It was an honor for me to play with Yuan Peng who was wushu sanda champion last year. Praise God for these blessings He had given me,” Balangui said.

Balangui is the third Filipino to bring a medal, the fourth time the Philippines fielded athletes to one of the toughest competitions for student-athletes in the world.

“Balangui may not have defeated Yuan Peng who grew up from the country where wushu originated and who was older than him but he still came home with a silver medal and with pride and honor not only for his family or his school but also for his country,” said one of his friends.
