Anton, Rivera are 2nd in Asia Gymkhana race

RACING PRIDE -- The country’s racing pride, Milo Rivera and Carlos Anton, clinched the 2nd place overall champion in the recently held Asian Auto Gymkhana Championship in Taiwan. With them is 13-year-old Slalom race champion Iñigo Anton. -- Bong Boado

This time, they are not champions but they gave a good fight.

Eight-time Automobile Association of the Philippines Driver of the Year Carlos Anton and four-time Slalom Race champion Milo Rivera clinched the second place in the team double knockout in the Asia Auto Gymkhana Competition (AAGC) held in Taoyuan, Taiwan over the weekend.

The winning pair was up first against powerhouse Japan in the final four team competition and swiftly disposed of the Japanese with impressive runs.

On the other hand, Taiwan knocked out Indonesia to make it to the finals against Team Philippines.  It was down the closest margin that host team Taiwan took the win over the Filipino tandem.

“Team Taiwan got us by less than 0.1 of a second in the end.  They prepared really hard for this and we gave it our best, but in the end it was just not our day,” Castrol-Yokohama driver Anton said after the race.

Team Indonesia prevailed over Team Japan for third place with Japanese racing legend Tetsuya Yamano taking home the top prize in the individual knock-out competition over Taiwan’s Tseng Kun-Yao and Indonesia’s five- time national champion Demas Agil.

Last year in Taiwan, Rivera and Anton took top honors in the qualifying heats during the individual events against 32 of Asia’s best and won the team competition for Team Philippines beating out Taiwan and Korea for the top spot.

During last year’s race, Rivera and Anton knocked out team Nepal and team Taiwan-D to make it to the semi finals where they met a formidable Team Korea after the latter took out powerhouse Japan.

The Philippine team then struggled past the Korean drivers to reach an epic final against host nation Team Taiwan-A.

Anton and Rivera also topped the individual qualifying competition against 32 other champion drivers.

Meanwhile, 13-year-old Baguio Achiever’s Academy student, Iñigo Anton, wowed the crowd and the other racers with his demo runs.

“It was a great experience and a dream come true for me to race with the top racers in Asia,” said Iñigo, who beat 12 drivers from nine countries.

“We didn’t expect him to do that well so we are just really thankful that he proved to be a force to reckon with against 32 of Asia’s best racers. We are so proud of Iñigo,” said the older Anton of his son.
