5 Cordillerans victorious in World Youth Martial Arts

CORDILLERA REPRESENTATIVES -- Three winsome lasses from the Cordillera, namely Liane Benito, Mariah Co, and Islay Erika Bomogao win gold medals while Rosemarie Recto and Felex Dave Cantores salvage bronze in their respective categories in the recently held Jincheon 1st World Youth Martial Arts Masterships in South Korea. With them are coach Bryan Olod and Muay Thai Association of the Philippines-Baguio Chapter Chair Joseph Oloan.

Young martial artists from the Cordillera  have contributed three gold and two bronze medals to the total medal haul of the Philippine national team in the recently concluded Jincheon 1st World Youth Martial Arts Masterships in South Korea.

The national team amassed six gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.

Coach Bryan Olod of Kafagway MMA and Muay Thai Association of the Phi-lippines-Baguio said the country emerged as the overall champion during the event held from Nov. 3 to 7 in Jincheon County, Chungcheongbuk-do Province.

Gold medalists are Liane Benito in the 48-kilogram under the 14 to 15 years old division, Mariah Co in the 51kgs., also in the 14 to 15 years old division, and newcomer Islay Erika Bomogao in the 45kgs. in the 16 to 17 years old.

Benito trains with Kafagway MMA under Olod while Co is with Tribal Torogi under coaches Christian Villareal and Brent Velasco. Bomogao trains with Team Lakay under coach Mark Sangiao.

Earlier, Benito won silver medal in the 14 to 15 years old category while Co shone in the 12 to 13 years old category winning bronze in the World Youth Muay Thai Championship in Bangkok, Thailand staged in August.

Winning bronze medals are Rosemarie Recto (51kgs, 16 to 17 years old category) and Felex Dave Cantores (60 kgs, 16 to 17 years old).  Both train with Kafagway MMA.

Benito, Recto, and Cantores are students of  Sablan National High School while Bomogao studies at Benguet State University-Secondary Laboratory School. Co is a student of Philippine Science High School at Irisan.

Other medalists from the Philippine team are Ghenyhan Berdon of Zamboanga, Bryan Ray Siglos of Zamboanga, Rudzma Abubakar of Zamboanga, who won gold medals apiece while Kristian Narca of Quezon City won silver.

National coaches Roland Claro, Jonathan Polosan and Preciosa Ocaya accompanied the team while the Joseph Oloan, chairman of MAP-Baguio, served as coach for the self-financed Team Baguio.
