ONE champion hopes aid will pour for MMA teams

HUGE SUPPORT -- ONE lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang, Team Lakay coach Mark Sangiao, and other fighters receive a check worth P567,718.50 from Suntrust President Harry Paltongan, who initiated the Team Lakay Golf Cup at Sherwood Hills Golf Club to raise funds for the rehabilitation of the gyms of the number one MMA team in the Philippines. Folayang has called on other groups to also support other MMA gyms in the region. -- HFP

ONE lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang expressed hope that more groups or private firms will extend support to the growth of mixed martial arts in the Cordillera by helping not only Team Lakay but also other MMA teams in the region.

Folayang said Team Lakay is just grateful that the achievement of its fighters was recognized by Cordillerans residing outside the region by responding to its call for help in upgrading its gymnasiums and equipment.

Folayang together with other Lakay fighters led by coach Mark Sangiao, received a check worth P567,718.50 from Suntrust Properties, Inc. President Harrison Paltongan, who personally oversaw the conduct of a golf for-a-cause held at Sherwood Hill Golf Club on June 1.

Paltongan, a lawyer from Otucan, Bauko, Mountain Province and a known personality in the country’s real estate industry, is not a fan of MMA but not until he learned the exploits of Folayang and other Team Lakay fighters. This prompted him to convince the company to help the team.

“As a native of the Mountain Province, I fully support the endeavor for the youth of Cordillera especially those involving education and sports,” Paltongan said.

He said that Folayang went to a Suntrust event to deliver a speech and Paltongan said he was moved with the MMA warrior’s story.

“I hope this fund will help enhance their training and inspire other youth,” said Paltongan, adding that he was persuaded to support Team Lakay because they can be models for Cordillera youth.

“Nakakataba ng puso na tayo mismong taga-Cordillera ang nagtutulungan,” said Folayang. Other Team Lakay members who witnessed the event were Geje Eustaquio, Honorio Banario, Danny Kingad, Joshua Pacio, Jomar Pa-ac, Jeremy Pacatiw, and Gina Iniong.

“This fund will support not only the Cordillerans but the whole Philippines,” said Sangiao.

Aside from Team Lakay, other MMA teams also need to improve and upgrade their gyms, which are crucial in improving the training of fighters, who have been representing the country in international competitions.
