Benguet willing to co–host Palarong Pambansa 2018
by Ofelia C. Empian

Benguet is willing to support the City of Baguio in its bid to host the Palarong Pambansa next year.

Gov.Crescencio Pacalso, in his letter reply to the city, said they recognize the importance of the nationwide sporting event for the province.

“We are confident that this will boost our efforts in promo-ting tourism and provide greater participation of our young people in the province and the region as a whole,” Pacalso said.

Earlier, Mayor Mauricio Domogan wrote both the local government units of Benguet and La Tri-nidad asking for their support in hosting the Palaro.

Domogan said the city will need the help of the nearby LGUs in order to pursue its bid to host the Palarong Pambansa where Luzon was tapped as the host for 2018.

“From the Visayas Region, 2018 Palarong Pambansa will be hosted in Luzon and we know many LGUs will signify their intent to host this event. With your support, we are confident that our bid will be given favorable consideration by the Palarong Pambansa Technical Evaluation Committee headed by the Department of Education,” Domogan said.

La Trinidad Mayor Romeo Salda said the LGU is willing to co-host the Palaro but they need to evaluate the facilities in the capital town.

He said based on the experiences of those who previously joined the national games in other areas, there are delegations that were not accommodated well.

“We have to see to it that we are ready for the hosting,” Salda said.

Provincial Sports Development Officer Dean Mark Monang said initially the billeting areas available in the province are the various schools such as Benguet National High School, Benguet State University, Puguis Elementary School, and Buyagan ES.

For the facilities, he said the province has the Benguet Sports Complex in Wangal with its oval and multipurpose gymnasium and the BenguetCapitol open gym.

He said the batted balls competition can be accommodated in Wangal while the football events can be held at BSU.

“We can prepare the facilities for next year. We are just waiting for Baguio to give us the details,” Monang said.

City Sports Development Officer Gaudencio Gonzales said they will convene a technical working committee to work on the details for the city’s bid for Palarong Pambansa hosting.
